The Wicked Witch of the West
/ Miss Gulch
Jemma Rix grew up on the Central Coast of NSW, and it was here during her early childhood that her love for performing and entertaining was nurtured. At 21 she moved to Melbourne to follow her dream of becoming a Musical Theatre performer.
Jemma’s first contract was with Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, where she was initially cast as the Bride of Frankenstein in the Monster Rock and Roll Show. She was then cast as Elphaba in a world first staged adaptation of Wicked, where she was privileged to meet and perform for the creative team of Wicked, including Stephen Schwartz, Winnie Holzman and Mark Platt. This role was especially unique since Jemma was required to perform parts of the show in Japanese.
Back in Australia Jemma was thrilled to join the 2008 Australian premiere of Wicked in Melbourne, where she was cast as Standby and performed the role of Elphaba. In 2010, she was honored to take over the role in Sydney. Jemma continued playing Elphaba for the Australian tour of Wicked throughout 2011 and then continued the journey with the Australian cast performing in Singapore and Seoul in 2012, belting out an amazing 800 shows from all these venues combined. In 2013 Jemma toured with Wicked to Auckland and Manila before returning Australia to celebrate the show’s ten year anniversary with a national tour to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.
Most recently Jemma starred as Molly Jensen in Ghost The Musical, touring across Australia. Jemma made her Sydney Opera House debut with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra concert Witches, sharing the stage alongside a stellar cast.
Jemma has performed in numerous live concerts including 2016 Prime Minister’s Olympic Dinner, 2015 Melbourne International Tennis Australian Open, 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup, 2014 State of Origin, 2014 Rob Guest Endowment Concert, 2011 Brisbane International Men’s Tennis Final, 2008 and 2010 Carols by Candlelight at Sidney Myer Music Bowl, 2008 and 2010 AFL pre-match entertainment, 2009 Australian Ethnic Business Awards, 2009 Qantas Business Awards, and Sydney’s 2009 Carols In The Domain. Jemma’s television appearances include Sunrise, Today, The Morning Show and Kerri-Anne.
Jemma is currently recording her first solo album due to launch in August and will be also recording solos, duets and quartets in the album version of the Witches concert.
Jemma Rix was nominated for a Helpmann Award as Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her portrayal as Elphaba in Wicked and she was named Theatre People Pro Choice Award Winner – Best Actress in a Musical, for Wicked.
